The Adventures of Harrowing Hopper: The Joy-Bringing Bunny

Have you ever given your time, talents or money only because you thought it was the right thing to do?  After doing so, did you feel a sense of joy?  Or nothing at all?  If you felt nothing at all, I think it is probably safe to say that you did it for the wrong reasons.  Maybe for recognition, personal gain, or out of a sense of obligation?

Recently, a coworker of mine decided to start bringing joy to the world and came up with an alter-ego in the process…Harrowing Hopper: The Joy-Bringing Bunny.  The alter-ego was crafted to ensure that he would not be giving to the world for all the wrong reasons listed above but would rather be giving out of the kindness in his heart.

His first mission?  Making greeting cards with his family to send to a couple of local nursing homes.  The greeting cards were inspired by an event sponsored by Creative Kids Rock – a non-profit that celebrates the creative artistic strengths of children with dyslexia.  He thought that it would be something different and creative to do to pass the time on a beautiful, sunny, lazy Sunday afternoon.

Can you guess which QAOM team member ‘Harrowing Hopper’ is?

Little did he know that not only would the time be well-spent in the accompaniment of close loved ones; it may have also brought more joy to him than the people on the other end of his creations.  During the time spent creating the greeting cards, he realized that his desire to bring a smile to the elderly’s faces likely brought him more joy than it would bring the recipients of the cards.

“Initially it was something fun and creative to do, as I’ve always liked being creative,” said Harrowing Hopper, “but during and after, I realized how a small gesture could make a person’s day.  That made me feel so dang good and brought joy into my heart by giving to others.”

When I asked him what exactly it took to create these cards, he said that all it took was paper, glue, and stamps – all of which his mother-in-law had at her disposal thanks to her scrapbooking hobby.  As you can see in the picture below, you can also throw in a few googly eyes as you see fit.

Giving your time, talents or money with a truly joyful heart results in a return that cannot be measured.  You will end up with the biggest smile of them all, as a joyful heart is good medicine.
